About Us

Wings of Love Bird Haven, Inc. began operating in 2003 when we become aware of the huge number of birds that were living a life of neglect and abuse.  We became a nonprofit 501c3 organization on February 18, 2005.

The second most popular pet in the United States are birds.  Along with this popularity, we see many problems.  First, we must remember that we have taken these birds out of their natural habitat.  Taking them out of this natural environment has produced many unfavorable behaviors.  Because of this undesirable behavior, birds are being passed from home to home--being doomed to a life of inconsistency as their guardians realize that they will never have the "Busch Garden's" bird they wished to have.  Unlike other domestic animals whose lifespan is 10-20 years, a parrot should live from 20-100 years depending on the species.

In an effort to stop this vicious cycle we have established Wings of Love Bird Haven, Inc.  Our organization offers an alternative to people who need a caring "home for life" for their bird as well as a loving retirement home for those birds that are unsuitable for placement.  It is our goal and desire to place all birds in a "loving forever home" as a family pet.  When this isn't possible they will remain at the Haven until we can either place them into a pre-approved permanent sanctuary setting or a permanent foster setting. Either way they will be given love and care for the remainder of their lives.

Birds are taken in for many reasons:  sometimes the guardian has become ill, or family circumstances will not allow the guardian to keep them.  We also receive many birds that are given up because of various unacceptable behaviors.  It is our desire to offer people the security of knowing that their bird will be cared for and that time and care will be taken in finding the best suitable home for their feathered friend.  We do not purchase birds. We do, however, offer a tax-deductible receipt for those birds and supplies that are relinquished to us.

Other Rules of the Haven:

We do not breed birds that are adopted into the Haven, nor do we place any of our adopted birds into breeding situations.

We do not adopt more than one bird out to a family or individual at a time unless these birds came in together and are a bonded pair.  If you wish to adopt more than one bird you must adopt a single bird---give that bird time to get used to you and your home before filing an application for another.  We suggest at least 3-6 months between adoptions.

We do not sell, trade, or use birds in our care for commerce or profit.

We promote responsible guardianship of all captive birds.

We promote education on all issues of avian welfare.

We oppose the selling of unweaned baby birds and production breeding methods.

We strongly discourage the mass-marketing and selling of birds through pet store chains, bird marts, and internet venues.

Due to the overwhelming numbers of birds that become "homeless" for one reason or another, there is a huge need for rescues to provide this service.  There are not enough places such as ours in the area. Frankly speaking, we are running out of room.  We need monetary help to expand our facility to be able to house more birds, as currently we are having to postpone acceptance of new birds until current residents are adopted out. With the addition of more space (ie. a new building or outside climate controlled areas) we could increase the numbers of birds we can care for at any given time.
